Viral videos from the World Humanoid Robot Games show two things at once. Sprinting robots beat the human 100-meter record — and running robots crash into barriers and fall down, because they cannot readily stop. A few fallen robots break at the waist in a shower of sparks or catch on fire.

That joint demonstration of prowess and limitation came from the second edition of the games, hosted in Beijing from August 22 to 26. Like the inaugural event in 2025, this year's challenged humanoid robots to run fast, perform kung fu or dance moves, fight in kickboxing, and play soccer or table tennis.

The progress is real

That humanoids went from lagging behind human record-holders last year to surpassing world records in the 100-meter sprint and standing high jump this year points to significant progress.

Dipam Patel, a PhD candidate in computer science at Purdue University and a research assistant at the US Army Research Lab, puts it this way: "All of that does display whole body control, because you need to move all the joints, hands, legs, arm, body, everything to accomplish that task. So there has definitely been a huge push in engineering from where they were last time to this time."

But they are not general-purpose

The same robots remain very far from general-purpose autonomous machines capable of handling practically any task. The reason lies in the design choice: these robots were engineered to accomplish just one task.

The evidence is in the spectacle itself. The running robots sprinted in a straight line and could not even slow down by continuing around the track after the finish line. Patel describes it plainly: "If you cross the finish line, that's the goal — it doesn't matter if you stop and it doesn't matter if you fall into different pieces. Some companies had different types of robots for different games or different tasks, because they were engineered for that task to be the best in that."

This year's games also tested more humdrum practical scenarios, like washing and hanging laundry. There, the robots appeared to lag behind typical human working speeds.

Why these showcases happen

The organizers include Chinese state media and the Beijing city government. The aim is to showcase the commercial potential of humanoid robots at a time when the country's robotics industry is developing rapidly.

The races and flashy events provide an entertaining spectacle that leads to easy headlines and viral clips. According to Patel, they also give robotics companies an opportunity to attract publicity and investor money by standing out from the competition.

One robot developed by Beijing-based X-Humanoid gained viral fame for winning the small-group 400-meter race with an unusual posture, arms held up near its face like a shy person hiding behind their hands. Its developers say the robot found that posture itself through reinforcement learning trials in simulation, shifting from a human-style runner's arm swing to swinging its arms near its face through hip rotations.

Why it matters

One suggestion from Patel shows how the games could become more meaningful as measurement: challenge the robots to run the same race ten times. That would measure what a one-off spectacle cannot — consistency and durability.

That distinction is what to hold onto when reading robotics news. When a record falls, what gets measured is what one robot did once, under ideal conditions, on a single task. Commercial value lies in the opposite: what it can do under ordinary conditions, repeatedly, across different tasks.

The images of robots catching fire say the same thing. A system tuned to cross the finish line takes no account of what comes after the line.
