What happened?

On August 13, 2026, Google announced a new feature for Google Sheets called Sheets canvas. The feature uses the AI model Gemini to turn row-and-column spreadsheet data into interactive mini apps without requiring any coding.

Users can create custom layouts by giving Gemini a simple natural language prompt, such as "create a visual work tracker." According to Google, these layouts can automatically adapt to use cases like seating charts, class tracking sheets, or sports stat dashboards.

Why does it matter?

Sheets canvas works as a dynamic, readable, and editable layer that sits on top of the original spreadsheet data. According to Google, changes made in the canvas or the spreadsheet are reflected in each other in real time.

The feature aims to make data visualization possible without requiring formula or programming knowledge, making Google Sheets more accessible to a wider range of users. Google shared examples such as wedding planning, fantasy football league tracking, and school project management.

What's next?

Google stated that Sheets canvas is being rolled out globally in English to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The feature is gradually rolling out to customers on Google Workspace Business or Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, as well as Google AI Pro for Education add-on subscribers.

Users can try the feature by opening a Google Sheets spreadsheet and selecting the "Create canvas" option from the Gemini side panel.

Rollout schedule and conditions

Google's release notes give two separate schedules: rollout begins on August 10, 2026 for Rapid Release domains and on August 31, 2026 for Scheduled Release domains. So if the feature is missing on a corporate account, that may not be a fault but a matter of which release channel the domain sits on.

There is one more condition: the user's Workspace “smart features” setting has to be enabled. On eligible accounts the Gemini icon appears in the Sheets side panel.

The category it targets

What Sheets canvas does is not new: turning table data into a kanban board, a form or a small app is what Airtable, Notion and similar tools have sold for years. What is new is that this layer can be built without buying a separate product, in the place the data already lives, and in plain language. Google's move reads less like a feature announcement than an attempt to pull that category inside the spreadsheet.

That carries a cost the announcement does not mention: the thing generating the layout is a model. The user is now placing a layer they cannot predict exactly between themselves and their own data. An error in a formula can be found by eye; the assumption a model-built layout used to group the data only becomes visible when the result looks wrong. Two-way synchronisation between canvas and sheet enlarges that risk, because a change made on the canvas is written straight back to the source data.
