What happened?
On August 13, 2026, Google announced a new feature for Google Sheets called Sheets canvas. The feature uses the AI model Gemini to turn row-and-column spreadsheet data into interactive mini apps without requiring any coding.
Users can create custom layouts by giving Gemini a simple natural language prompt, such as "create a visual work tracker." According to Google, these layouts can automatically adapt to use cases like seating charts, class tracking sheets, or sports stat dashboards.
Why does it matter?
Sheets canvas works as a dynamic, readable, and editable layer that sits on top of the original spreadsheet data. According to Google, changes made in the canvas or the spreadsheet are reflected in each other in real time.
The feature aims to make data visualization possible without requiring formula or programming knowledge, making Google Sheets more accessible to a wider range of users. Google shared examples such as wedding planning, fantasy football league tracking, and school project management.

Users can try the feature by opening a Google Sheets spreadsheet and selecting the "Create canvas" option from the Gemini side panel.
