What happened?
Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat), NVIDIA, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) opened a center called UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) in Yogyakarta. This center is the country's first university-based artificial intelligence technology center. It was established as part of Indonesia's AI Center of Excellence initiative, bringing together public institutions, industry, and academia under one roof.
Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, said the initiative lays the foundation for the country's AI sovereignty and aims to make artificial intelligence a driving force for economic growth and national competitiveness. UGM Rector Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, Ph.D., noted that the center supports Indonesia's AI goals through education, research, and innovation.
Why does it matter?
The center combines Indosat's sovereign GPU-as-a-service platform, GPU Merdeka, with NVIDIA's full-stack AI platform. This setup provides UGM researchers and students with enterprise-grade accelerated compute, AI software, open-source tools, pretrained models, and technical advisory support. Indosat CEO Vikram Sinha said the companies believe no Indonesian should be left behind in the AI era.
Marc Hamilton, NVIDIA's vice president of solutions architecture and engineering, said Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, has major opportunities in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and disaster preparedness. Hamilton said NVIDIA is committed to bringing its NVIDIA Nemotron open models and expertise to Indonesian talent to help realize this potential.
What projects are being run at the center?
The center is initially focused on three projects:
- eNose-TB: Developed by a team from UGM's Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, this project is building an electronic screening technology that analyzes breath samples to detect tuberculosis. Indonesia records more than 1 million new tuberculosis cases each year, and diagnostic access remains limited in rural areas.
- SmartAgri: Using multimodal AI that combines satellite imagery, sensor data, and local agricultural knowledge, this project offers precision farming recommendations to smallholder farmers. Around 30% of Indonesia's workforce is employed in agriculture.
- Tech4Disaster: For Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, this project is developing a geospatial AI platform that processes satellite and sensor data using NVIDIA's accelerated computing power. The system aims to provide earlier warnings and faster coordination for communities and emergency response teams during disasters.
What's next?
UGM's team, led by Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra, plans to accelerate the eNose-TB project using the infrastructure the center provides. The center became operational the same week it was announced, and Indosat aims to expand access through the GPU Merdeka platform to researchers, students, startups, and innovators. No concrete timeline was shared regarding whether the center's scope will expand beyond healthcare, agriculture, and disaster management.
