What happened?
Two video editing suites announced AI updates on the same day. Adobe moved access to its AI generators directly into the Premiere timeline through a new interface called Generative Media. Blackmagic Design added AI assistant support to DaVinci Resolve 21.1.
What the two announcements share is not the generative capability itself but where it has been placed. The models already existed; what changed is that the editor no longer has to break the workflow to reach them.
Adobe: generating without leaving the timeline
In Premiere, editors can now highlight an empty gap on a video or audio track and generate context-aware, fully editable clips. No jumping to a browser or external app for a missing piece of B-roll or an audio element.
The notable detail is model choice: from the timeline itself, the editor can pick among Adobe Firefly, Google Veo, Runway, Luma and Kling. Adobe is not imposing its own model as the only option; it leaves the choice of what suits the project's style to the user.
- New audio tools arrive in Premiere in beta: separating overlapping speakers, automatically ducking music under speech, and adjusting dialogue and ambience independently.
- After Effects gets a beta AI assistant too, letting editors reorganise projects, fix technical problems and create effects in plain language without writing expressions.
Blackmagic: the assistant comes from outside
The headline feature of DaVinci Resolve 21.1 is that the software can now be used with external AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. Users can analyse projects in plain conversational language, organise media files, change settings and run batch processing.
The company's examples are concrete: building a cut of key moments from long videos, removing unwanted clips, processing and preparing deliverables. The update also extends the Fusion 3D and shape toolset with more than 25 new tools, adds over 100 new tools and controls for editing and colour grading, and broadens camera format support on the Photo page to include Fujifilm's GFX and X series, Leica SL and Sony A7R.
Two different strategies
The two updates, arriving the same day, represent two approaches. Adobe brings generative models inside its own interface and invites rival models in too; the user never leaves Adobe's window. Blackmagic instead opens the software to outside assistants; the intelligence sits not in the software but in the tool connecting to it.
Each carries a cost. Adobe's path gives a consistent experience, but Adobe decides where generation happens and what gets sent. Blackmagic's path gives flexibility, but auditing what the assistant reaching into the project actually does stays with the user — and an edit project, including the raw footage being worked on, is usually covered by a confidentiality agreement.
What goes unsaid
The same thing is missing from both announcements: the provenance of generated content. Neither explains how a B-roll clip generated in the timeline will be marked in the final delivery, whether the client will be told, or whether it will carry content credentials.
Adobe has a content credentials infrastructure, and how it joins up with this new interface will matter. The moment footage generated in the edit suite lands on the same timeline as footage shot on set, that metadata is the only thing telling the two apart.
